A brief history of the Henrico Community Band...
The Henrico Community Band started in January of 1992 with auditions at Lakeside Elementary School. Henrico County had first tried to start an orchestra, but switched to a community band. With financial support from Henrico County Division of Recreation & Parks, the band was born. Cheryl Miltenberger, a photogrammetrist with VDOT (and a clarinetist) was the conductor until the end of 2002. The band's first "gig" was a birthday party on May 2, 1992. The band has since participated in July 4th celebrations at Meadow Farm, Musical Mondays at Maymont, Halloween concerts, retirement home concerts, and a summer park series at Deep Run Park. In 2003, Archer Johnson, a bassoonist with the band, took over the role as conductor and continues in that role today. Archer is retired from the US Postal Service.
The band is made up of people from all walks of life and all ages. Many members are retired from their careers. The band rehearses on Thursday nights from 7:00 - 8:30 PM at Lakeside Baptist Church.
